Eclectic American Gardens

In this presentation, Sally Pagliai introduces uniquely American garden properties inspired by the art, music, architecture, and landscape design of many cultures. Pagliai describes how an appreciation of the brilliance of our diversity and an understanding of genius loci (topography, climate, vegetation, light, and surrounding architecture), guide landscape designers to create a truly American garden aesthetic.

The presentation looks at the interpretation of Japanese, French, Italian, Moorish, and Spanish gardens on American soil and how sharing and understanding these differences has produced strong, beautiful hybrid American gardens. Slides of gardens designed by Studio Pagliai and significant properties in the US, including The Getty Center, Filoli Gardens, Maymont, and Brookgreen Gardens, demonstrate the variety of classical and contemporary influences inherent in an eclectic American design.
